You do need the base map for the GPS, but that typically comes bundled when you buy it. If not, get the datacard one not the CD/DVD.
Once that is installed, you can import courses you create. As Ian mentioned, creating/loading courses is not straightforward; thank gawd for the kind people who created gpsies! I also create maps in bikely or bike route toast master (it is called something like that).

Do you know if that method would work on something this size (http://sites.google.com/site/end2endjourney/home/the-route) and if so, would I be able to get something that big into the GPS ?

I have a 305 this works for me, my dad has a 705 and does the same using just the training center... I don't think he has had to buy any extra maps ?

Hi,
I have a Garmin 705 bought as a gift for a ride I am planning later this year. I now need to buy the correct UK maps to load and wanted to know if anybody can offer advice on the best format for me to purchase (they are available as downloads, datacards or DVD/CD). My understanding is that you need CD/DVD to plan routes on PC and download or datacard for the GPS itself. What I would like to know is if I plan the route on say googlemaps, can I then transfer that to the GPS in some way.
Thanks,
Paul Doherty
